The naturally stable atmospheric conditions underground make it the perfect place for preserving paper and other items. Winsford Rock Salt Mine in Cheshire opened in 1844 and is the oldest operating mine in the UK.

The Mine is located 150 metres (over 500 ft) below the Cheshire Plain and produces over 1 million tonnes of Rock Salt annually. Roadways formed by the tunnelling method now exceed 135 miles and are increasing daily.
